Description

Feminized cannabis seeds are bred to contain no male chromosomes, so they’ll only grow female plants. That makes these seeds the ideal choice for growers looking for a quick and easy grow. Find your next favourite sativa or indica, THC or CBD strain today, and start growing tomorrow!

Why choose feminized seeds?

For gardeners who require a quick and easy growing and flowering process, these seeds are the ideal choice. Some medicinal cannabis users may be deterred from cultivating their own supply because of the perceived difficulty of growing, or of identifying the different sexes and removing males early in the blooming period. If this process is too long delayed,
the males will fertilize the females, leading to a disappointing harvest of seeded bud with a lower amount of trichomes. Just one male plant is capable of fertilizing a large number of ladies. This is the last thing that most gardeners desire, especially those growing for medicinal reasons. Feminized, or ‘fem’, varieties offer a simple solution to these issues, as there is no
need to spend time during their first days in flower checking for males, nor energy removing and destroying them once they are identified.

What are feminized seeds?

People who are new to the world of indica and sativa may also have only a vague idea that there are different sexes of this
versatile plant. Seeds that occur naturally are gained from simply allowing a male to fertilize a female, and the resulting seeds will in turn produce both masculine and feminine offspring. There is no reliable way of telling which one will grow into which sex of plant, short of actually growing them. It is therefore traditional to germinate more regular seeds than one intends to grow (often twice as many) to allow for the removal of males. With feminized seeds, gardeners decide how many bushes they want, germinate that number of seeds, then simply grow, flower and reap their rewards. With the introduction of these new cannabis seeds, cultivation became easier than ever before!

How is it possible to create feminized seeds?

Every cannabis plant has the innate ability to grow the reproductive organs of the opposite sex as a survival mechanism. This ability, which is not unique to cannabis in the plant kingdom and has even been observed in some species of frogs, is one of the factors that enabled it to successfully proliferate in climates all around the world, adapting and surviving even in hostile conditions. It is not unknown for male plants to produce feminine flowers, making it possible for the plant to self-pollinate, produce seeds and ensure the survival of the species for another generation. However it is far more common for a female plant to produce male flowers for the same purpose. This fantastic survival trait is not only useful for the plant, but has now been turned to the advantage of people who wish to grow it.

Rather than being produced from male spore meeting female flower, feminized seeds are the result of forcing a female plant to produce pollen and then using this to fertilize another female. The resulting seeds lack male chromosomes, so when they are grown out, each plant will produce female flowers and growth characteristics. It is important to note that when this technique was in its infancy, a breed chosen to create male pollen usually had a genetic background that was prone to produce hermaphrodites anyway. These were easier to trigger into growing the distinctive banana-shaped male reproductive organs. Unfortunately they could also pass on their marked hermaphrodite tendencies to their offspring. Nowadays, significant advances in feminized cannabis seed breeding has solved this problem with new techniques for coaxing even the most reluctantly hermaphroditic variety into a yield of the fertile yellow dust.

Feminized seeds or female seeds?

It should be noted that seeds in this category are technically not female seeds, as the biological definition rests on them having a full complement of genetics. Some seedbanks declare that they stock ‘100% female’ seeds, but we consider this to be both scientifically inaccurate, and misleading, since they are not truly female. It is also for this reason they are seldom recommended as a good source for a mother plant. The process by which mothers have their life-cycle prolonged, and the constant low-grade stress caused by removing cuttings, is best withstood by regular females which are more resilient when kept under these conditions. Crossing naturally male cannabis plants with feminized ones should result in a yield of seed-bearing flowers, but the resulting offspring will have the same roughly 55% feminine, 45% masculine ratio as seeds created in the regular way, and there is no real advantage to doing this. However, there is little difference in aroma, flavour, resin production, THC level, THC to CBD ratio and so on, between a regular and ‘fem’ variety.

This category collects every feminized seed-strain available from the White Label Seed Company and Sensi Seeds. The filters can be used to easily view them according to the size of yield, flowering time, height gain, price, indica, sativa or hybrid content, indoor or outdoor growth suitability, whether it has won a cannabis cup, and so forth. Some of the most famous names, such as White Widow, Master Kush and different types of Skunk and Haze, can be found here.

Chances are you’ve already had a bad experience with regular seeds.

Namely, carefully attending to your plants for weeks… until you realized an undetected male had mercilessly fertilized your beautiful, bud-bearing females.

Weeks of hard work down the drain, and your know-it-all friend giving you that classic “Told you so” look.

But what you may not know…

Is that feminized seeds can also give you a poor harvest if you don’t choose wisely.

That’s why we’ve selected the best female strains for beginners (and experienced growers) for ease of growth, THC content, flavors and effects, and more.

All this, of course, from reputable vendors − so you avoid getting duds.

Let’s get started!

Best Feminized Seeds − First Look

− Best feminized marijuana seeds (up to 26% THC) − Weather-resistant seeds for beginners − Fast-growing cannabis seeds (8 weeks) − Tasty auto-flowering strain − High-yield indoor feminized cannabis seeds − Potent feminized seeds (25% THC) − Strong alternative for beginners − Best cannabis seeds for hydroponics − Cannabis seeds that taste like dessert − Low-odor seeds for apartment buildings

1. GG4 (ILGM) – Best Feminized Cannabis Seeds (Our #1 Shoutout!)

Also known as Gorilla Glue #4, GG4 is a popular, highly potent hybrid that offers a perfect balance between Indica and Sativa genetics.

When smoked, GG4 delivers an unrelenting euphoria that’ll leave you gleefully glued to your couch for hours. And that probably has to do with its high THC content, which typically falls somewhere between 24% and 26%.

The strain is easy to grow, extremely resistant to disease, and responds well to topping, making it a great candidate for outdoor growing.

Tired of measly harvests?

Expect to get up to 18 ounces of bud out of a single 3×3 ft area – making it one of the best feminized cannabis seeds for beginners looking to get the most out of their first harvest.

Flowering times are relatively similar for both indoors and outdoor operations, and you can expect your plants to start producing fat juicy nugs within 8 to 9 weeks.

Who Is GG4 Best For?

Because it’s so easy to grow, GG4 is best for beginners as a high-yield strain that’s resistant to mold and disease.

It’s also a great choice for outdoor growers in search of a hearty strain that’ll brave the elements.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

If you plan on cultivating this strain outdoors, know that it does best in warm/dry climates without large temperature fluctuations between seasons. Harvest season is mid to late October.

GG4 is also a beast when grown indoors, although be forewarned, the plant does have a tendency to grow taller than average, so make sure you have adequate space.

2. White Widow (Crop King Seeds) – Best Female Pot Seeds for Beginners

Originally developed in the Netherlands, White Widow is a well-balanced hybrid that’s slightly Indica dominant.

Like GG4, the strain is easy-to-grow and does well both indoors and outdoors.

This legendary strain has won several Cannabis Cup awards, and flowering typically occurs within 7 – 9 weeks. When they do, you’ll be greeted by some truly beautiful buds coated in the dense white resin that gave it its name.

Don’t want a couch-lock?

Well, despite being Indica-dominant, White Widow is known for being fairly energizing and uplifting. It also comes with 0.7% CBD which adds a light yet well-appreciated background warmth to the high.

When combusted, White Window has a strong, almost pungent odor that some people love, and others could do without. That said, we enjoyed the harsh, skunky flavor along with its pine and earthy undertones.

Who Is White Widow Best For?

White Widow is best suited for novice growers with minimal experience. The strain is hardy enough to withstand disease and mold and does great outdoors.

Because of its higher-than-average yield, White Widow is good for getting the most out of limited space.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

White Widow can be grown all year round and prefers warm, continental environments.

When growing outdoors, be aware that this isn’t the most discreet strain, and plants can grow up to 10 feet tall in some cases.

3. AK47 (ILGM) – Best Fast Flowering Feminized Weed Seeds

AK-47 is a Sativa-dominant hybrid that’s won awards at both the Cannabis Cup and Toronto Expo.

While its name may invoke images of armed men, the high is actually pleasantly mellow and pairs well with the uplifting cerebral buzz common among Sativa strains.

AK-47 is also known for having a reliably steady buzz making it a great choice if you want to avoid the harsh burnout typical of Indica-dominant cannabis strains.

Want to try something a bit harder to grow?

Well, AK-47 is better suited to growers who’ve already gone through a harvest or two (in other words, it’s not recommended for complete newbies).

Most people choose to grow AK indoors in either hydro or soil, but they can also be grown outdoors in a moderate climate.

Another major benefit to AK-47 is its short growing time, and assuming everything goes according to plan, you’ll be able to harvest dense and resinous buds in as little as 8 weeks.

Who Is AK-47 Best For?

AK-47 is best for semi-experienced growers looking for a high-yield Sativa-dominant strain.

AK-47 is also a good option for those just getting into Hydroponics and want something easy to work with during their first time.

When trimmed down, AK-47 cannabis plants become quite compact, making them ideal for a small closet or garage set-up.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

When grown outdoors, the harvesting season is in October, meaning you should plant these feminized cannabis seeds 53 – 63 days before.

The plants do best in a cool yet sunny environment and don’t like high humidity.

4. Strawberry Cheesecake (Seedsman) – Best Auto-flowering Feminized Seeds

Most popular feminized seeds are photoperiod, meaning they flower based on changes in sunlight. While this isn’t an issue when growing outdoor plants, it can result in tons of extra work for indoor growers.

If you’re looking to avoid this, we recommend Strawberry Cheesecake − an Indica-dominant strain that’ll leave you laid on your couch grinning from ear to ear.

At 15% THC content, the strain offers good value, especially when you consider that 500 g per plant is very obtainable.

As for its #1 selling point…

Strawberry Cheesecake is truly a treat for your taste buds, and once inhaled, you’ll be hit with a sweet, almost creamy aroma with sharp berry undertones.

Unlike most feminized strains, Strawberry Cheesecake is rich in Limonene terpenes, which play a major role in its unique taste.

Who Is Strawberry Cheesecake Good For?

Strawberry Cheesecake is good for indoor growers who want to forgo the hassle of photoperiods.

It’s also a truly beautiful strain, and its dark purple flowers contrast well with the sparkling white trichomes that coat its buds.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

When grown outdoors, these feminized seeds prefer dry, warm climates like that of the Mediterranean, parts of the Southern United States, or summer in the Pacific Northwest.

Because its buds are so dense, they can be prone to mold when grown in humid climates. Harvesting season typically runs between September and October when grown outdoors.

5. Green Crack (RocketSeeds) – Best Feminized Seeds for Indoor Growing

Green Crack is a fruity, highly-energetic strain that’s a heavy favorite among Sativa lovers.

In fact, Green Crack was given its name by the popular rapper and cannabis connoisseur Snoop Dogg.

Are you an experienced grower?

Well, these feminized cannabis seeds can produce a substantial yield if you control their growth and use low-stress techniques. This strain is also hard to match for a sharp and invigorating mental buzz.

That said, Green Crack isn’t the best for beginners, and you’ll need to know a thing or two about indoor grow setups if you want to get the most out of this celebrated strain.

Who Is Green Crack Best For?

Green Crack is a good choice for someone who wants to grow a well-known, high-yield strain indoors.

Because the strain requires a higher than average level of attention, it’s great for leveling up your cultivating skills and practicing low-stress techniques.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

These quality cannabis seeds require a constant source of sunlight and love temperatures between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Harvest time is late September, and the flowering period is typically around 9 weeks.

If you do grow this cannabis strain outdoors, odds are your yield will be closer to 350 grams per plant.

6. Purple Kush (Crop King Seeds) – Strongest Feminized Marijuana Seeds (NOT Beginner-Friendly)

There aren’t many strains as popular as Purple Kush, and at 25% THC, this Indica-dominant plant is one of the strongest around.

We can’t stress enough just how potent this strain is, and once you’ve ripped a few hardy tokes, you’ll be hit with a feeling of seditious delight that borders on narcotic.

Purple Kush does well indoors and, when treated with care, can yield up to 400 grams of dense, pungent buds per plant.

Up for a challenge?

Purple Kush is considered an advanced-level plant as it will require constant pruning and topping to ensure you get the most out of it. In turn, you’ll be rewarded with one of the strongest and most attractive marijuana plants available.

Who Is Purple Kush Best For?

If you’ve gone through a few trials and tribulations throughout your cultivating journey, Purple Kush is the perfect way of putting all the lessons you’ve learned to the test.

Purple Kush is also known for being substantially less psychedelic than other Kush strains and is a good option for those searching for a body high with little head buzz.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

Purple Kush can handle cooler climates better than most feminized seed strains, meaning it can be grown in most cannabis-friendly places around the world.

When grown indoors, monitor the amount of heat/humidity the plant receives as bud rot is somewhat common with this strain.

7. Super Skunk (ILGM) – Strongest Feminizing Seeds for Beginners

If you like the idea of Purple Kush, but don’t think your growing skills are up to scratch (yet!), Super Skunk is a high-THC, Indica dominant strain that’s fairly similar.

This easy-growing strain produces a strong, almost debilitating body high and has one of the skunkiest aromas of all female plants.

These are also considered one of the best feminized cannabis strains if you suffer from chronic pain, which explains how they’ve become so popular in the medical marijuana scene.

Indoors or outdoors?

Both! Its thick stems and heavy branches make it a good choice for outdoor growing, especially in areas with heavy wind. But the plant also thrives indoors, assuming you don’t mind the smell!

If you’re thinking about picking up a pack of these high THC seeds, consider doing so from ILGM. Besides being one of the best places to buy seeds online, the seed bank currently runs a Buy 10 Get 10 deal.

Who Is Super Skunk Best For?

Super Skunk is good for beginners wanting to grow a high potency strain either indoors or outdoors – especially those who use cannabis to treat issues like insomnia or inflammation.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

Super Skunk grows best in warm sunny climates with low humidity levels.

Harvest season runs anywhere from mid-October to mid-September and flowering time usually runs 8 – 9 weeks.

8. Girl Scout Cookies (Herbies Seeds) – Best Female Weed Seeds for Hydroponics

Don’t let its name fool you − Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) is serious business. With a THC content of around 28%, it packs a powerful punch.

Just a few hits will unleash a wave of Euphoria on your brain and leave you in a state of deep relaxation.

Because the strain is 50-50 Sativa-Indica, the body load isn’t overwhelming, and you’ll get a pleasant balance between head and body buzz.

With its dark orange pistils and silky white trichomes, GSC is very aesthetically pleasing and is very popular among hobbyist growers.

Who Is GSC Best For?

Girl Scout Cookies is an ideal choice if you want something that offers all the benefits of a strong Indica without the couch locking effects of strains like Purple Kush or MK Ultra.

GSC is also a good fit for small hydro setups as it’s shown to do well in this environment.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

GSC takes around 9 weeks to produce flowers and is typically harvested in mid-October.

While GSC is highly resistant to pests, mold, and diseases, the plant can be very bushy when grown outdoors and will require pruning.

Girl Scout Cookies does best in dry, Mediterranean-like conditions.

9. Gelato Cake (Seedsman) – Best-Tasting Feminized Cannabis Seeds

With its deep fruity aroma, Gelato Cake tastes just as good as it sounds.

If you pack a fat bowl and rip a quick bong toke, your palate will be overrun with notes of vanilla, sour citrus, pine, and berries.

Thanks to its balance of Indica and Sativa genetics, the high is mellow yet never drowsy and is a good option for any time of the day.

Who Is Gelato Cake Best For?

Gelato Cake is heavily sedating and is considered a good choice for those who suffer from insomnia-related issues.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

Like most plants, Gelato Cake prefers warm sunny climates with limited humidity. Flowering time is typically around 8 weeks, allowing you to harvest your crop in early September.

10. Jack Herer (ILGM) – Best Low Odor Female Cannabis Plants

One of the major obstacles people face when they grow cannabis seeds indoors is the odor. While it may be a pleasant reminder of things to come for you, others may find it unpleasant.

If you live in an apartment building or condo, then this unfortunate reality can take strains like White Widow and Purple Kush off the table.

This is where Jack Herer comes in.

Indeed, the well-balanced hybrid is low in odor and offers a smooth, long-lasting buzz.

Due to its resistance to disease and fast growth times, the strain is a grower’s dream and is known for its heavy resin production.

Who Is Jack Herer Good For?

Jack Herer is an awesome pick for those who want an easy-to-grow Hybrid with little smell.

It also has a somewhat lower THC content compared to some of our other picks, which some users find preferable.

Growing Season/Preferred Climate

Under ideal conditions – meaning dry and warm – Jack Herer plants grow quickly and can reach 16 inches in just a few weeks.

Plants grown outdoors can be harvested in early September after a 9-week flowering cycle.

How To Choose the Best Female Cannabis Seeds − Buying Guide

To choose the best feminized cannabis seeds for you, take a moment and consider the following:

Reputation

Before buying feminized seeds, always check the seed bank’s reputation. Is it known for producing high-quality strains, or is it plagued by poor reviews?

To answer these questions, you need to check cannabis forums, Reddit, and third-party review sites.

Strain

The effects can vary greatly from one strain to another. If you’re looking for something that’ll have you energized, social, and uplifted, we recommend going with a Sativa-dominant option.

If you’d prefer to be sprawled out on your couch rocking a sedating body load, then checking out these top Indica-dominant strains is the better option.

Germination Guarantee

While most sellers claim to have a high germination rate, you should strongly prefer those that back it up with actions.

If a seed bank stands by its seeds with a germination guarantee, then you know you won’t get duds. Or else they’ll have to send you new seeds at their expense.

THC Levels

Do you prefer something mellow to get you through the day or something so potent it’ll leave you blissfully useless?

As a rule of thumb, any strain above 20% THC is considered strong, and anything above 25% is considered very strong.

For very mild options with potential medical benefits ( pain relief, insomnia…), buying feminized seeds with less than 10% THC is preferable.

Yield

If you want to be well-rewarded for your cultivation efforts, then we recommend picking a strain that delivers above 400 grams per plant.

In time, you’ll be able to max out the yield of any plant with different growing techniques, and that’s when you can look at lower-yielding plants that have more exotic flavors and effects.

Climate

Something that beginners often forget − not all feminized seed strains thrive in the same weather.

Therefore, if you’re growing outdoors, make sure to pick a strain that suits your specific climate.

Most importantly, if you live in a particularly humid region, stay away from strains that are prone to bud rot.

Free Seeds

Did someone say free?

Yes, most of the top seed banks − like ILGM and Seedsman − dish out a few free seeds on every order.

In particular, we think ILGM’s Buy 10 Get 10 Free deals are the first thing beginners should look at if they want to save big.

Best Female Weed Seed Strains − FAQ

More questions about securing the best cannabis seeds to suit your newbie level? (*jokes*)

OR perhaps you’re already an experienced grower, but got stuck with a bunch of male plants…

Whatever your struggle, we’ve answered some of the most common and confusing questions about female seeds below.

See also  Amsterdam Weed Seeds

What Are the Highest Yielding Feminized Seeds?

The highest-yielding feminized seeds are GG4 and Super Skunk, in our experience.

Without using any difficult growing techniques, these feminized seeds can give up to 600 g of weed per plant.

What Is the Best Feminized Strain?

The best feminized strain is Gorilla Glue #4, in our opinion. Not only can it produce up to 600 g per plant, but the strain is easy to grow and a great choice for beginners.

What’s Better: Feminized or Regular Seeds?

Feminized seeds are better than regular seeds because you know you’re only getting female plants.

Unlike feminized marijuana seeds, with regular cannabis seeds, half or more of your seeds may grow to be male plants, which don’t produce buds. What’s more, males may even pollinate your female plants, hence ruining most of your harvest.

Are Feminized Seeds Always Female?

Yes, feminized seeds almost always grow into female marijuana plants.

That said, online seed banks do make mistakes, and you may occasionally find a regular seed in your pack. If this happens, remove the male plant before it can fertilize the females.

Will Seeds From A Female Plant Be Female?

Yes, seeds from a female plant will always be female.

That said, low-quality female seeds can produce hermaphrodites. To avoid this, only buy feminized cannabis seeds online from reputable vendors.

What Are Auto Feminized Seeds?

Auto feminized seeds are female cannabis seeds that flower based on age. By contrast, regular photoperiod plants wait to observe changes in the amount of daylight before flowering.

While this isn’t an issue with outdoor plants, recreating these small changes in daily light while growing indoors can be time-consuming. For this reason, most growers – especially beginners – opt for autoflower seeds.

If you’re looking for quality auto-flowering seeds, we recommend checking ILGM’s autoflower seeds, which are all feminized (so you also skip the hassle of male plants).

What Is the Downside To Feminized Seeds?

The main downside of feminized cannabis seeds is the higher cost compared to regular seeds.

While some growers claim feminized plants give a lower yield, there is little evidence to support this claim.

How To Feminize Seeds?

You can feminize seeds using Gibberellic acid, Colloidal silver, or the Rodelization method.

Of the three, Colloidal silver is the easiest and involves spraying it on a female plant for 10 days during the flowering process. From there, use the pollen from the Colloidal-sprayed plant to pollinate regular female plants.

When this is done, the feminized plants will produce only female cannabis seeds.

What Are the Best Cannabis Seed Banks?

The best seed banks are ILGM and Crop King Seeds, according to our research. Both options offer a germination guarantee and a large selection of the best feminized marijuana seeds.

ILGM offers free seeds and a 10% discount when you pay using Bitcoin. To top it off, the seed bank is one of the very few that give free shipping on all orders.

How Long Do Marijuana Seeds Take to Grow?

Marijuana seeds take 10 to 12 weeks to grow from seed to harvest. Growing times can change dramatically based on several factors, including cannabis strain, growing environment, weather conditions, and time of year.

Indoor plants typically grow faster than outdoor plants, although this isn’t always the case.

What Are the Best High-CBD Marijuana Seeds?

The best high-CBD marijuana seeds we’ve seen are Critical Mass CBD and OG Kush CBD, both available on our recommendation for the #1 best seed bank – ILGM.

Final Thoughts on the Best Feminized Cannabis Seeds

By now, your head is probably swimming with ideas of strains, buds, and blazing.

If you’re still unsure about which feminized cannabis seeds to buy, we strongly recommend GG4 seeds from ILGM. Not only are they easy to grow, but the final results are extremely rewarding and potent.

As an alternative, White Widow is also one of the most popular feminized strains and particularly good for outdoor growing as it will resist disease and mold.

But if another weed strain from our list has caught your attention, then don’t overthink it − go for it.

Just be sure to pick something that’s within your experience level, or else be ready to be disappointed at first until you get the hang of it.

Here’s to a bountiful harvest!

First Feminised Seeds Company Since The 1990’s

Dutch Passion were the first company in the world to create feminised cannabis seeds back in the 1990’s. Feminised seeds changed the way people grew cannabis as the grower can use a smaller grow room with fewer seeds for each grow. Each feminised seed will eventually grow into a mature female plant. Feminised seeds account for the vast majority of cannabis seeds used, these days over 95% of all cannabis seeds are feminised.

The process to create feminised seeds was discovered in the 1990’s when Dutch Passion allowed some female cannabis plants to bloom for many weeks longer than normal, just to see what happened. The plants eventually produced male flowers, the pollen was collected from these. To everyone’s great surprise this (‘female’) pollen produced seeds which only gave rise to female plants. Today, different techniques are used to produce and collect this ‘female pollen’. Feminised cannabis seeds have made growing your own cannabis easier than ever before.

Since the invention of feminised seeds, we have continued to improve feminised seed performance and results. Dutch Passion’s main focus is to provide the best performing cannabis seeds to professional growers and home growers. We source the finest cannabis genetics from our unrivalled network of breeders and genetic specialists around the world. When you buy your next feminised seeds buy them from Dutch Passion, the original creators and masters of feminised seeds.

What Are Feminized Cannabis Seeds ?

Around 95% of feminised cannabis seeds grow into mature photoperiod female cannabis plants. Before feminised seeds were invented people grew from regular cannabis seeds which produced roughly equal numbers of male and female plants. Growers are usually only interested in the buds which grow on the female plants, male cannabis plants are normally discarded.

When Dutch Passion first created feminised seeds back in the 1990’s it was a revolution for growers who could grow their weed easily with fewer seeds, fewer plants, smaller grow rooms and less energy. Feminised seeds have remained popular with the majority of growers ever since.

Feminized vs Autoflowering Seeds

Feminised seeds have 2 main phases to their lives, veg and bloom, these can be controlled by the grower. During the first ‘veg’ stage of their life, feminised seeds grow vegetatively. During ‘veg’ growth (usually under 18-24 hours of daily light) plants grow leaves, roots and branches but no buds. Buds start to appear when daily light hours are reduced to 12/12 light which induces bloom (flowering). This requires around 12 hours of darkness and 12 hours of light per day.

Autoflower seeds grow from seed to harvest under 20 hours of daily light indoors. No change to the amount of daily light is needed for the autoflower plant to start flowering, it happens automatically (hence the name, auto seeds). Some growers regard autoflower seeds as a slightly simpler/faster way to grow cannabis. You can achieve very high quality cannabis levels from either feminised seeds or autoflowering seeds. Note that autoflowering seeds from Dutch Passion will only produce female auto plants, meaning that you never need to worry about male auto plants.

And Autofem Seeds Were Born

Autofem seeds are simply another name for autoflowering seeds. In the early days of autoflower seeds they were occasionally called autofems by some growers. The ‘fem’ part of the name refers to the fact that the seeds only produce female autos. Autoflower seeds/autofem seeds are one of the easiest ways to grow your own cannabis quickly. You don’t need to be an expert grower to get seriously impressive results from autofem/autoflower seeds.

Feminized vs Regular Seeds

Regular cannabis seeds produce roughly equal numbers of female and male plants. Some old-school traditional growers prefer regular photoperiod seeds if they are e.g. collecting male pollen for breeding projects. But most people strongly prefer to grow from feminised seeds which give rise to mainly female plants.

When using feminised seeds the grower can use a smaller grow room with fewer plants, compared to regular seeds. Dutch Passion are one of the few remaining seed companies to offer a full collection of regular seeds from the best classic varieties.

Top 10 Tips For Growing Feminised Seeds

Growing your own cannabis is really easy. With the best feminised seeds you will grow better quality cannabis than you can buy. Home grown cannabis is easy and enjoyable to grow and cheaper than buying it. Here are our top 10 tips for growers.

1. Choose your feminised cannabis seeds and your supplier carefully!

Even the very best growers can’t produce top quality buds from second rate genetics. You need to use the best quality feminised seeds, grown from the finest quality genetics. Dutch Passion were the original inventors of feminised seeds. Since inventing feminised seeds, the Dutch Passion team have constantly strived to further improve the results achievable from them.

Don’t cut corners when it comes to the choice of your cannabis seeds. The cost of the cannabis seeds is a very small part of the final overall harvest value. It pays you to research your options carefully. Does your seed supplier have a good track record in feminised seeds? Have they been able to gain any professional recognition with cannabis cups? Has your seed supplier stood the test of time and remained at the top of their profession for decades?

2. Try not to over-complicate your grow

Gain experience slowly, don’t be tempted to try complicated grow techniques (such as deep water culture hydroponics) until you have completed several successful grows. Often, people will start growing in large containers of soil. This minimises the need to quickly become an expert in nutrients, and allows an easy way to understand the basics. Cannabis isn’t difficult to grow, it’s called weed for good reasons! The new grower is encouraged to learn the fundamentals of cannabis growing before attempting to learn more technically demanding skills and techniques. Organic growing in soil is recommended and Biotabs is good nutrient line for beginners to start with.

3. Continual improvement of your grow room

Try to learn something from each grow, improve your skills and grow experience, learn what you can from the internet and books. Avoid temperature extremes, indoor plants don’t like temperatures above 30ºC, nor do they like being much below 20ºC. Indoor growers typically like to keep the temperature around a steady 24-25ºC with the lights on, and a couple of degrees cooler at lights out.

Many growers prepare their water the day before it’s required. This allows the temperature of the water to match that of the grow room. Never use ice cold water, it will shock the roots. Some growers feel that allowing the nutrient mix to stand for a day before use allows any Chlorine (often used during water treatment) to be released from the water.

Experienced cultivators insist on using pH meters to ensure their water and feed solutions are at the correct pH. Likewise, they will often use EC meters to monitor the electrical conductivity of their feed solutions. EC, or electrical conductivity, is a measure of nutrient concentration. Meters should always be calibrated and checked before use. Professional growers will always have spare meters available in case one fails.

4. Growing feminised seeds outdoors is easy too

Growing feminised seeds outdoors is even easier than growing indoors. In the northern hemisphere, feminised seeds are often harvested around October. Often the grower will germinate the feminised seeds indoors. (see the Dutch Passion guide on best ways to germinate cannabis seeds). This gives the seeds the best possible start, and protects the seedlings from the worst of the early season weather while they are at their most vulnerable. After a couple of weeks of indoor cultivation, the seedlings can then be planted outdoors when the weather is warm and the last frost has gone.

5. Experiment with different periods of vegetative growth

It’s common to use around 4-5 weeks of vegetative growth (before bloom) when growing feminised seeds indoors. But some growers get great results with longer veg periods of 6-10 weeks. The extra time spent in veg allows for a larger final plant size. This is great if you prefer to have smaller numbers of XL yielding plants and have the space to accommodate them.

For some growers who don’t mind large plant numbers, it’s possible to grow feminised seeds with just 1-2 weeks of vegetative growth (or even none at all!). The result will be a fast ‘Sea Of Green’ harvest of medium size plants which may often have the bulk of their buds on the main bloom.

For outdoor growing it is recommended to pre-grow (18 hours of light per day) the plants indoor for at least a few weeks. Between 3-4 weeks will usually do, use even longer VEG periods if you are looking for the biggest outdoor plants as possible. It will ensure a stronger and healthier plant that will cope better with tough outdoor growing conditions than a young, freshly sprouted, seedling.

6. Avoid the temptation to over feed your cannabis plants

One of the most common mistakes, especially from less experienced growers, is the temptation to over feed their plants. Over-feeding plants can permanently damage and ‘burn’ the roots of cannabis plants, especially young plants. It is crucial to start feeding nutrients at low concentrations and steadily increase. At the first sign of nutrient burn (perhaps you will note the ends of the leaves turning white/yellow and eventually brown and crispy) you should reduce nutrient concentration immediately and consider a water flush for several days in a row.

Overfeeding your plants will not increase size or potency, but it can permanently stunt the growth of your plants. Understand your nutrients well and never add more nutrients than necessary. Less experienced growers may benefit from a simpler nutrient regime, avoiding an over-complicated array of nutrients until they are more experienced.

7. Avoid the temptation to over water your cannabis plants

Along with using excessively high nutrient concentrations, another of the most common errors is the tendency to over water their cannabis plants. This is also a frequent error seen among new growers. Cannabis roots need oxygen to thrive and grow well, roots do not grow well in water logged soil. Using excessively ‘wet’ soil will limit root growth, this will restrict the final size and quality of the plant.

Experienced growers will often use a moisture sensor in their grow medium which measures moisture content and indicates when the roots are too dry. Products like the Blumat Moisture meter are recommended to prevent over watering. Note that numerous growers find new grow containers such as fabric grow containers or Air-pots are a great way to improve levels of root oxygenation.

Compared to traditional grow containers, felt grow sacks and air-pots allow good levels of root aeration and are recommended. Another tip is to mix some coco medium through your soil, this will improve the aeration levels too.

8. Find out when you prefer to harvest your buds

Feminised seeds offer the perfect amount of grower control over the final result. You can opt for long or short veg periods and have some control over the final plant size and yield. Connoisseur growers also know whether they prefer their buds harvested on time, or perhaps a little early/late. Some growers find that giving the buds an extra week or two in bloom can give a heavier, ‘stonier’ feel to the high.

Conversely, harvesting a little earlier may allow a faster harvest and perhaps a slightly more ‘lively’ or energetic quality to the high. Much depends on your personal preference. But the next time you harvest a plant grown from feminised seeds, consider harvesting a portion of the buds earlier than usual as well as harvesting some buds later than usual. After curing, try comparing the buds and see if you have a strong preference.

9. Consider upgrading to LED lighting

As your experience improves, consider LED lighting. LED is more expensive than HPS, but it is used extensively by serious growers. HPS lights were never designed for cannabis cultivation, they were simply a cheap option which worked. LED lights have a spectrum optimised for cannabis growing and they emit less heat than HPS. LED growers find they use less electricity and have less heat issues compared to HPS growers. But the main benefit of LED is the scope for quality/potency improvements. Most growers find they can push potency and flavour to new levels by upgrading to LED, and would therefore never switch back to HPS.

10. UV supplemental lighting

Some growers are starting to use supplemental UV lighting to boost the potency of their harvests. The idea is to mimic the effects of the UV content in the sun’s rays. Professional cannabis growers have found that adding UVB to their grow room can improve cannabinoid content. THC levels can increase by 10-25% relatively.

Historically, the cheapest way to add UVB to the grow room is to add a few ‘reptile tubes’. These are fluorescent tubes with a high UVB output designed for indoor lizard owners. Usually, cannabis growers add UVB for 2-3 hours per day for the last 2-3 weeks of bloom. But some UVB specialists claim that a small background presence of UVB can be used from the start of the grow.

Other types of UV lighting, like UV-A, are being explored as well. First reports showed UV-A could have significant effects on terpenes and the aroma of cannabis, as well as having a small effect on photosynthesis. UVC is used for sterilisation, to kill bacteria or get rid of pathogens, but is very damaging to all living things in a high dosage.
